Pearl River residents no longer have to drive to Slidell to do their grocery shopping, as Jubilee Foods opened a sparkling new supermarket on Feb. 21. The 30,000-square-foot facility features a large selection of fresh produce, a meat and deli department and a bakery.

Family-owned and operated since 1996, owners Steve and Karen Fecke relocated to Pearl River from Chalmette after Hurricane Katrina destroyed both their home and their business.

Pearl River officials and a former state senator helped the owners of Jubilee Foods celebrate the grand opening of their new supermarket on Feb. 21. They also brought along 13 key members of the store's management team.

"Our move to Pearl River is a move to 'higher ground,' not just in terms of the store's elevation," said Fecke.

Former Louisiana Sen. Walter Boasso was also on hand to congratulate the family on their success.

"Pearl River is very lucky to have such wonderful, hard-working citizens doing business here," said Boasso.

The store will feature numerous promotions, specials and activities through March 1. Face painting, a magician and free balloons will be available at various times for children, and customers can also win plenty of door prizes, including a 42-inch plasma television.

Jubilee Foods is located at 61461 Louisiana Highway 1090. For more information call 863-6000.

" What a great loss to the people of Chalmette and the many others who left. But it's a big gain for the people of Pearl River.
Not often in life will you meet so many good people in one place.
May God bless Steve and Karen and his many fine employees. They deserve it. "
