St. Tammany Fire District 3, located in Lacombe, will share $740,000 of an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency with four other Louisiana fire departments to buy new equipment.

Lacombe's share of the grant is $122,550, and District 3 Chief Chuck Flynn said the money would go to purchasing 28 self-contained breathing apparatus units for his firefighters.

The SCBA units are oxygen masks and oxygen tanks firefighters use when entering burning buildings to help them breathe.

Flynn said the new SCBA units is a welcome relief for his department. They have SCBA units, but they are old.

"They are obsolete," Flynn said. "Some of them are 15 years old, and the factory doesn't make parts for them anymore."

Flynn said the fire department will also purchase a special software computer program that will help them test and certify the new SCBA units.

"This is a really good thing for us. We need those SCBA units," Flynn said.

He said District 3 would probably take delivery on the equipment by the middle of March.

The AFG grants are designed to upgrade and enhance response capabilities of local first responders.

The grants go to buying new equipment, vehicles and fire prevention activities. Since 2001, FEMA has awarded over $3.3 billion in AFG funds all over the country.

The other Louisiana fire departments that will share the AFG grant are the Kentwood Volunteer Fire Department, which will get $70,210; the Natchitoches Fire Department will get $47,975; the Baton Rouge Fire Department will get $160,000, and the Shreveport Fire Department's share of the grant will be $333,658.

All the AFG recipients are listed on Web site, www.firegrantsupport.com.

" "not only was he a one man crime wave he always had other people with him", so I guess, that would take the "one man" out of the crime wave. "
