Pope John Paul II sophomore Laura Ricciardone struck out 17 batters on opening day Friday in a 3-0 victory over Pearl River's Lady Rebels in a game held at PRHS.

The only base runner she allowed a bloop single behind second by Courtney Harris. Ricciardone credited her backstop and said she felt good out there.

"I was throwing well," she said. "My catcher Jeanne Delaup was catching everything I threw at her. The curveball was working real well. They weren't hitting it."

Ricciardone spent most of last season relieving Christina Bachemin. This season she is the ace of the staff. Ricciardone said she likes her new role.

"I get a chance to show myself as a leader and help the team out. I think it's going to be a real good breakout year for the whole team," Ricciardone said.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning Delaup opened with a single. Meghan Collins reached on an error, scoring Delaup. Ricciardone helped herself out with a sacrifice fly and Brittany McGowan drove in the third run.

Sarah Wrenn suffered the tough-luck loss. She threw a complete game, gave up no earned runs, allowed five hits, while striking out six.
